Did You Know?
Lake Tahoe is the largest alpine lake in North America, the eighth deepest lake in the world and the second deepest in the United States and has a maximum depth of 1,645 feet deep with the average depth being 989 feet. It has a surface elevation of 6,229 feet above sea level. It is 22 miles in length and 12 miles wide and has a shoreline of 71 miles (42 of those miles border the state of California and 29 the state of Nevada).
North Lake Tahoe straddles California’s eastern and Nevada’s western Stateline. It is located in the Sierra Nerved mountain range and is 200 miles northeast of San Francisco, 98 miles northeast of Sacramento, California, and 45 miles southwest of Reno, Nevada.
Sixty-three streams and two natural hot springs feed the Lake. The only outlet is the Truckee River in Tahoe City. But more water evaporates every day, in fact 1,400,000 tons of water, than is released through the Truckee River. This amount would satisfy the daily water requirements for 3,500,000 people!
